The old saying holds true ‘the more you know the more you need to know’ and that applies to every aspect of our lives.  Whether discovering water on the moon or finding new species here on earth, we are constantly learning new things about our wonderful universe.  Within the field of education, we can put into practice what is needed to ensure that new discoveries become a reality.

There was a time in our nation’s history when it was enough to learn how to read, write and perform simple mathematical equations.  But, as we have progressed as a people, more education is needed to keep up with all the new discoveries and technologies in the world in which we live.

No longer does the one room schoolhouse, or even grade level education suffice when it comes to increasing our need for knowledge.  As much as we have progressed in the field of education, we find that many children are being left behind.  It has been discovered that, even when children are placed in a certain grade level based solely on their age, it is not a guarantee they will learn.

We have endeavored to address this discrepancy by creating special education by means of schools designed to meet this dilemma.  However, since this type of schooling is out of the reach for many children, they remain within the cookie cutter atmosphere of the public school system.  In recent years, we have seen the rise of a third option that is reachable for many: schooling at home.

It first became a viable option due to the concerns of parents as to the quality of education their children were receiving within either the private or public school system.  There was also a very real concern as to what type of curriculum their children were being taught.  Recently, it has become apparent to many that the private and public school systems are becoming less about educating children and more about indoctrinating them into a world view contrary to the wishes of many parents.

Into this concern come pioneers to the homeschooling movement Dr. Raymond and Dorothy Moore.  With many years of research and documentation leading them to the forefront of this latest phenomenon, they have become the vanguard to educating today’s children at home.  Among the many books they have published over the years comes: “Home –spun Schools”.

Home-spun Schools” offers two much needed areas of information for any parent considering homeschooling their child: the testimony of the parents themselves to encourage you that you can also home school and, the legality to teach at home so you will know the laws as it pertains to homeschooling in your state.

Every walk of life is represented in “Home-spun Schools” to give you the encouragement needed when considering the option of homeschooling.  There are entries from bankers, builders, dentists and nurses, as well as teachers and single parents.

In addition, in chapter 13 titled “How To Deal With The Law” you will find a common sense approach to determine what your legal rights are as a parent when it comes to home schooling your child.  There are test cases referenced, as well as a wide range of information to ensure you are standing on legal ground.

In “Home-spun Schools” the Moores have painstakingly documented the voice of many and given us a solid start knowing the law when deciding to home school.  They have provided iron clad evidence to confirm that children deserve the best opportunity to succeed in their education and their life, and that can include the decision to home school.
